As the global output of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is projected to double in 2025 to reach two million tonnes, this figure would still account for just 0.7% of the aviation industry’s total fuel needs. That sobering statistic, shared by IATA during its 81st Annual General Meeting in New Delhi, underscores how far the world—and especially Africa—still has to go in greening air transport. Despite abundant raw material potential, Africa remains largely absent from SAF supply chains, even as early strategies begin to take shape.
