Half of Global Commercial Aircraft Now Financed Through Leasing – report

Nearly half of the world’s commercial aircraft fleet is now financed through leasing, underscoring a structural shift in airline finance as carriers grapple with aircraft shortages, lingering financial constraints and intensifying competition for capital, according to a report published by aircraft lessor Avolon.

The findings are detailed in Avolon’s UPNEXT Outlook 2026, released on Jan. 23, which highlights how leasing has moved from a supplementary financing tool to a core pillar of the global aviation system.
