Between Green Skies and Ground Realities: African Aviation’s Journey Toward Sustainable Transition

Sustainability emerged as a key theme during the 13th edition of the AFRAA Aviation Stakeholders Convention, held in Kigali on May 12–13, 2025.During a high-level panel moderated by Maureen Kahonge, Head of Business Development at the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), the CEOs of RwandAir, Yvonne Makolo, and Kenya Airways, Allan Kilavuka, outlined their visions for a more sustainable future in African aviation. Facing persistent challenges such as rising operational costs, limited regional integration, and the global push toward carbon neutrality by 2050, both leaders presented forward-thinking strategies designed to align growth with environmental stewardship.
