Goodbye ECOWAS? Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Reinforces Split with New AES Passport

It’s official. As of today, Wednesday, January 29, 2025, citizens of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger can travel using a common passport bearing the colors of the Sahel States Alliance (AES). This highly symbolic step underscores the three Sahelian nations' assertion of sovereignty, forming a bloc of over 72 million people that has now distanced itself from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
